An open vein

A Taste for Guilt

Fingers pleating a linen blanket, smoothing it out, pleating it again. A taste
for guilt. Intermittent grief. Intermittent surprise at the absence of grief.

A resolution to avoid four-letter verbs: Love. Want. Feel. Wait. Stop. Hide. Tell.
Bolt. Don't.

Fear of sudden movements. A desire to embrace hedonism. A reluctance to
touch and avoidance of the night sky. A reverence for stillness.

A varnished knowledge of culpability. An open vein of melody in the shower,
and, in another room, the sound of water dripping on metal.

-Joanne Merriam, from "The Glaze From Breaking"
