I was fortunate enough to win [livejournal.com profile] longsufferingly's fic auction for [livejournal.com profile] help_japan. I suggested a few prompts, including J2 AU inspired by Asimov's Caves of Steel series. She took that one and ran with it and did her usual phenomenal job, despite never actually having read Asimov. Look What They Made has a fantastic Jensen POV, good plot, and exploration of some classic sci-fi ideas. I love it. :)

[livejournal.com profile] madame_meretrix is clever. (She's also kind and funny and makes a great tour guide, but that's not quite as relevant right now.) Her fics often have a reality to them that set them apart. You may not be able to put your finger on exactly what gives them that ring of truth, because she doesn't beat you over the head with gender theory or identity issues or what have you; rather, she tells a compelling story and lets the characters unfold themselves naturally. (You may realize, later on, that you learned something, but it will be a pleasant surprise.)

She does self-discovery particularly well. If you missed Take the Hit last year, in which Jared learns that everyone has some kind of baggage, it's just a matter of how you learn to let it go, you should remedy that. And this year, her [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang story Don't Hide Your Light gives us a Jensen who's known Jared all his life, but doesn't really know himself. It is a lovely read and has it all: good characterization, moments of hilarity and delight, enough angst to be real and interesting, enough schmoop to satisfy [me, anyway], hot sex, and a fun supporting cast (which, naturally, includes JDM since this is Meretrix we're talking about. ;)

SO if you haven't yet bid on me at [livejournal.com profile] help_japan because of my heartfelt misguided comment that I wouldn't write anyone/JDM, THINK AGAIN!

For [livejournal.com profile] madame_meretrix and anyone else willing to consider reading 500 words (exactly!) of Angel/JDM, because if she's crazy enough to ask, I'm crazy enough to write. :P

help the hopeless, or something )

...OKAY I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT I'M DOING. I should never be allowed near either of those two.

I haven't had a functional computer at home for almost a month. I still don't, and am not certain when that's likely to change. As I don't access LJ or its related email from work (or any computer that requires my real ID) I'm pretty much totally out of the loop. If you've commented on something and I have apparently rudely ignored it; if you've posted something amazing or personal and I haven't commented; or if you're waiting for more (any?) story, I do apologize. (If you'd forgotten all about me, as I hadn't been that active even in the months leading up to the Great Computer Crash of '09 - that's cool. I still apologize.)

Also, it means I haven't been able to work on a couple of WIPs, including the one I had originally hoped to post for a very special birthday. But I couldn't let it go by without getting on here somehow to wish [livejournal.com profile] madame_meretrix Many Happy Returns of the Day! I hope you have/had an awesome day, and I look forward to being back around reasonably soon. And if you haven't seen the pattern for these BSG Viper Socks, I hope it's a little something to brighten your day. :)

Go read [livejournal.com profile] snowpuppies' stunning Willow/Tara ficlet Enough. Wonderful.

It reminded me that I'd been meaning to post this here. Written for [livejournal.com profile] madame_meretrix in the most recent round of [livejournal.com profile] fan_ku - Willow, after Tara's death.

in the old stories
hearts could be removed, kept safe
in boxes, or birds,

hidden from those who
sought to destroy, made secret,
defense against death.

how then to deal with
this loss? the covenant ark
is broken and spilled,

the spreading blood is
from her own heart, though it beat
in another breast.

she chose a bad place
to hide her heart, too open,
too vulnerable,

too human. she's seen
alternatives, mad futures,
burnt-out shells of worlds -

they now seem a thing
most greatly to be desired.
bring down the power.

*cough* unless we're talking about overdue fic deadlines, in which case I am hiding under the bed *cough

I couldn't stand my state of ignorance, and begged Erin to send me the secret questions meme so I could discover why I showed up three times (second only to one Sam Winchester). In doing so, I promised to post my own answers. Take with salt. I have barely slept in days.

[livejournal.com profile] madame_meretrix is fantabulous. Yup.

Sometimes I wish I could have followed her and [livejournal.com profile] apreludetoanend into Supernatural fandom. Because I love them both and I miss playing with them, and because I'd like to be writing stuff they'd like to be reading. Especially for birthdays.

But you know what? It's surprisingly easy writing for a fandom you don't really know, if you go with AU RPS. Kinda. Sadly, this is only a drabble, but it's my only SPN output thus far so, y'know. Take what you get. *g* Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] darkhavens for advice and inspiration.

Taking The Wheel )

This is not really Meretrix's birthday present - which, um, I started last year and still haven't finished - but she's kindly given me a couple of months grace.
electricalgwen: (spangel)
Last night I got stung on the elbow by a wasp. I was kneeling down and leaned forward, and put my elbow down right on something that stung it. Hard. I think it was a wasp but I didn't get a good look. It really hurt, still does!

Also, one of our fish, the male pineapple swordtail, died a couple of days ago. By the time I noticed the following morning, much of his biomass had been recycled back into the aquarium (in other words, somebody had eaten him), but fortunately so far everyone else still looks healthy. That was an interesting lesson/discussion for my son - much like the time there were (very unexpectedly) baby fish in the aquarium one morning, but by suppertime they were gone despite my efforts to protect them...

On a happier note, the other night [livejournal.com profile] madame_meretrix posted some awesome fandom haikus, which triggered a whole impromptu evening of Fan-Ku (TM). Go check it out for a mix of fun, weirdness, beauty and porn mostly about SPN, J2, Spike, and accountancy (yeah, really). I missed it, being asleep at the time (darn time zones), but wrote a spur-of-the-moment thing the next morning:

only for her would I write Spangel )
