I was fortunate enough to win [livejournal.com profile] longsufferingly's fic auction for [livejournal.com profile] help_japan. I suggested a few prompts, including J2 AU inspired by Asimov's Caves of Steel series. She took that one and ran with it and did her usual phenomenal job, despite never actually having read Asimov. Look What They Made has a fantastic Jensen POV, good plot, and exploration of some classic sci-fi ideas. I love it. :)

[livejournal.com profile] madame_meretrix is clever. (She's also kind and funny and makes a great tour guide, but that's not quite as relevant right now.) Her fics often have a reality to them that set them apart. You may not be able to put your finger on exactly what gives them that ring of truth, because she doesn't beat you over the head with gender theory or identity issues or what have you; rather, she tells a compelling story and lets the characters unfold themselves naturally. (You may realize, later on, that you learned something, but it will be a pleasant surprise.)

She does self-discovery particularly well. If you missed Take the Hit last year, in which Jared learns that everyone has some kind of baggage, it's just a matter of how you learn to let it go, you should remedy that. And this year, her [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang story Don't Hide Your Light gives us a Jensen who's known Jared all his life, but doesn't really know himself. It is a lovely read and has it all: good characterization, moments of hilarity and delight, enough angst to be real and interesting, enough schmoop to satisfy [me, anyway], hot sex, and a fun supporting cast (which, naturally, includes JDM since this is Meretrix we're talking about. ;)

I never usually participate in comment fic memes, mostly because they're generally done and dusted by the time I become aware of them. But no longer!

There are tons of fun prompts here:

Go! Laugh! Cringe! Write! :)

OH MY GOD.

Artificial leaf could be more efficient than the real thing.

Small, green, efficiently converts solar power to electricity. One of them could power your house.

Anyone who read that story and said, "Wow, I wish the cube existed," there you are.

My mind is blown. :D

So for various reasons including access problems, time, and people being away, I haven't seen anything past 6.05. We are about to remedy that. EXCITEMENT. :D

Also, what the heck was I thinking, signing up for everafter? I still have my hurt!Sam prompt fic to write this month, and a pile of stuff at work. Darn work.

ETA: AAAAAHHHHHH! I got so excited I flailed around with my saltine cracker and it flew apart and my fellow sofa mates were not amused. (Especially the second time.) Also: damn, all of a sudden, odd bits of stuff I wrote in my AU s6 fics seem less clever because OH LOOK THERE IT IS.

I had a lovely birthday yesterday! Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] affabletoaster, [livejournal.com profile] deirdre_c, and [livejournal.com profile] entrenous88 for their kind happy birthday wishes, to [livejournal.com profile] iadorespike for a cute e-card (that felt like the speed at which I do most things these days, Anna! *g*), and to [livejournal.com profile] apreludetoanend for the cupcake. You all brightened my day immensely. :)

In the evening, there was a nice dinner out, and then Inception. Which. Wow. I see what everyone's on about now, that was an amazing movie! I, uh, may need to see it again. ARTHUR! ♥♥♥ I would ramble more about it except I have got to finish packing. I'm heading out in half an hour for a few days vacation away, probably internet-less, but with Guy Gavriel Kay's new book Under Heaven. :D

I also got a teeny pocket-sized external hard drive for backing up to, which means, among other things, that I will probably finally getting around to installing Snow Leopard on this machine - and then, hopefully, a program that will make work a trifle easier.

Green Means Go has showed up a couple of times in BB rec threads at the anonymeme, and didn't get a single negative comment on its own thread, which makes me pretty happy because it's not like there's any reason for anonymous people to be falsely nice about it.

And it's sunny! And blueberry season!

Have a great few days. :)

This vid is probably linked all over SPN fandom by now, but if not it should be! It's a brilliant celebration of SPN, of Sam&Dean and why we love them, but mostly it's about fandom. Of fan involvement and love and fury and creativity.

I have to run off to work and can't say as much as I'd like to, but really, check it out. A wonderful antidote to the last week or so, and prelude to TONIGHT!

Heh. I finally managed to watch 5.16 last night, so now I can trail around and read everyone's reaction posts and maybe even that comment fic meme. <3

Though I don't know why everyone's so upset... )

ION, I am seriously trying to write 1000 words a day on my bigbang fic, because otherwise there is no way it will be done. So far, so good, assuming I can do some tonight once the boys are in bed. The story is coming together - I've realized there is actually a fourth major faction in play, which complicates matters a bit but solves some of the plotholes I was running into - but there is still a LONG way to go. Eep.

I do like talking about icons. So I hopped on board this meme when it came around again. :)

1. Reply to this post, and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon squee. Whoo!

A couple of days ago [livejournal.com profile] essene chose these ones for me:

Hallowe'en party tonight! My hair is... well, not black. But it's darker than it was. I think it's as dark as temporary hair dye will go on my hair.

River Tam costume is ready! I have perfect boots from the Army Navy Surplus store. I tried shredding the sweater sleeves last night with limited success (it's machine-knitted top down, unfortunately), and the skirt did not dye quite as well as I'd hoped, but the overall effect is pretty awesome. The Denizen's Kaylee outfit is super as well. AND SHE MADE A JAYNE HAT IN TWO DAYS (for our, uh, prop Jayne.)

I got my flu shots today. You?
electricalgwen: (jubilant gaia)
I have way too much stuff piled on my desk at work. This afternoon was mostly spent slogging through it; I unearthed a fat envelope that came a week or two ago, which I had assumed contained promotional material or some such crap and could wait until I got through more urgent stuff.

No. (Well, yes, it could wait. But it wasn't unsolicited crap.)

It was a complimentary copy of an anthology in which an essay of mine appears.

I've had stuff published before, so it felt strange to be completely, ridiculously gleeful over this, but the other stuff is all academic. I think this is the first time that a piece of my non-academic writing - my personal writing - has appeared in a book.

It makes me very happy. I have been grinning all evening. :D

Also, I felt inspired, came home and actually wrote another 500 words of fic. GOD IT IS LIKE PULLING TEETH THESE DAYS ARGH. But, progress! *facepalm*
electricalgwen: (spn anna hopeful)
I just wanted to say that [livejournal.com profile] apreludetoanend is pretty damn awesome. She made me Anna icons! And kissing!Sam icons! And that was after producing my current default icon (ouija scene from IMTOD) which gets compliments everywhere it goes, and is particularly amazing because I wrote to her saying what I wanted and hadn't seen anywhere, and she explained that I hadn't seen it because what I wanted was technically impossible due to the camera angles in that scene, AND THEN SHE PRETTY MUCH PRODUCED IT ANYWAY. Amazing I tell you.

Also, she makes me icons in fandoms she doesn't follow, and icons I want to GIVE OTHER PEOPLE. I mean. What did I do to deserve this largesse?? (NOTHING, THAT IS A RHETORICAL QUESTION.)

In conclusion: ♥
electricalgwen: (spn ouija)
Meta/Episode Reaction: I was depressed by a couple of 5.01 reaction posts that seemed to be all "Sam is a big loser and everything ever is his fault!" (Okay, over-reacting maybe, but. Lay off Sam, please. A little.) This is not that post. This is everything I wish I'd had the time to figure out and say. Awesome.

Vid: I like Depeche Mode. No apologies. In Your Room is amazing. Sam, Dean, panic room, angst. Spoilers through 4.22.

So. I have a new obsession. (No, it’s not Kung Fu Panda, though bonus points if you recognized the quote.)

I held out on Supernatural for a long time... )

Tonight, as soon as the Denizen gets home from work, we’re going to break out the knitting and watch All Hell Breaks Loose.

*anticipates*

I stapled my finger, while repairing the stapler (so Elder Son could create something out of the recycling). Ow ow ow. Also, I can't get The Glory of Love out of my head.

LJ has not managed to figure out why I still cannot load certain journals, although someone has asked some relevant questions and, I hope, gone away to think about it.

Two years ago we were in Finland in early June. I had work stuff until at least 6 each night, but it was so light that we could still do all kinds of walking, climbing and sight-seeing after supper. The cathedral in Helsinki stays open until midnight in midsummer. For some reason, this year seems to be lighter than usual here, in these longest days.

Aftermath won Best Short in the Mystical Orgins Corner in Round 8 at the Fang Fetish Awards (some time ago, but I forgot) and has been nominated for Best of Rare Male Slash Pairings in Round 9. Thanks to whoever keeps putting it forward! :)

Battlestar Galactica season 4! Yowza! I am having a ball this week talking meta with [livejournal.com profile] madame_meretrix, at possibly excessive length, and now feel the need to spend the evening wandering around looking for new icons. Speaking of icons, [livejournal.com profile] ubiquirk made me this Torchwood one! Yummy, no? Thanks, Ubi!

Two more papers have appeared in print. This is good, but I now have nothing in the pipeline. (Hence, my evening would be better spent not looking for icons... but I have Very Little Brain at the moment.)

What am I going to write for the [livejournal.com profile] lynnevitational?

electricalgwen: (tw captains kiss)
Kita keeps posting links to the Torchwood spoiler clips and I CANNOT STOP looking.

I've set the DVR to record it on Wednesday night, because I won't be here to watch it. Because we're going skiing for a week! :D

I think I've packed everything this time...

Link me if you post anything awesome in the meantime, as I know the flist will be pretty daunting when I get back. Also, LJ has been giving me grief again, with the same set of journals, so I haven't been able to catch up on some of my bookmarked "To Read" stuff. *sigh*
