I have a significant birthday coming up in the very near future. I have time off work, and the grandparents are going to take the kids. I want to go somewhere new and/or do something different. However, I am not sure what and I am an indecisive sort of person, and also we are pretty bad at planning things in advance. Hence, nothing is organized yet.

Tell me my destination! Any and all suggestions for where to go and what to do while there will be taken under advisement. :D

Final decision will take the following factors into account, however: we have just under a week. I don't want to spend too much time traveling or jet-lagged, so eastern to middle North America is probably best. We like outdoor things, also art and music, interesting geology or architecture, active things like cycling or kayaking are fine. Not so big on sports or shopping, though little bits of either could be fun.

Apparently LJ has been under some kind of DDoS? And has been down a lot? I completely failed to notice, that's how busy the last ten days have been. ARGH.

Somebody must have vidded SPN to INXS's "Devil Inside," y/y? Because OMG DO WANT.

Today's been good. Christmas cookie baking with the boys, making pizza, basketball, good music, and I even got a bit of writing in.

We just played 'Apples to Apples' before Elder Son heads off to bed. I was not familiar with this game before the Attic Denizen moved in; it's loads of fun. Tonight, apparently I am awesome, profound, snappy, distinguished, unusual, charismatic, cute...and dead. :P

(Also, the winner. ;)

*blink*

It's cold and raining and a guy with sandals and greaves and a short sword and a breastplate and bare thighs just ran past my house. That's dedication. I could barely stand to get out from under my flannel sheets and electric blanket.

Remember I said I had a talk to write for this weekend? I'm sitting down to do it at the last minute (as one does) and, upon having a quick look in a folder marked "Talks", have just discovered that I have a talk on this topic that I put together a couple of years ago. YAY.

Mind you, it needs some updating and expansion, but this is going to knock hours off the time required. \o/
electricalgwen: (QoW Read)
Work is chewing me up. I've gotten home around midnight for the past four days, and a couple of them started at 7 am. Today was a little easier but still busy, and tomorrow promises to be more of the same. And it's not just that it's been busy; it's been busy with tough, technically demanding, emotionally distressing stuff.

I am way behind on LJ and also on writing, and next weekend I have to give an hour long talk to a bunch of people who I suspect currently know nearly as much as I do about what I'm going to talk about, so I have to do a pile of research before writing up the talk. I had hopes of doing it this weekend but. Ha. Also, I haven't yet seen SPN 6.03.

The rest of the family have gone away to relatives for Thanksgiving, which I told them to do because I was going to be busy and no fun at all, but it's still a wee bit sad. I'm eating freshly-made guacamole in an empty house and when I stop crunching my Tostitos, I can hear funny noises in the backyard. I hope it's raccoons.

On the plus side, I had a nice bath and beta-read something good. :)

I had a lovely birthday yesterday! Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] affabletoaster, [livejournal.com profile] deirdre_c, and [livejournal.com profile] entrenous88 for their kind happy birthday wishes, to [livejournal.com profile] iadorespike for a cute e-card (that felt like the speed at which I do most things these days, Anna! *g*), and to [livejournal.com profile] apreludetoanend for the cupcake. You all brightened my day immensely. :)

In the evening, there was a nice dinner out, and then Inception. Which. Wow. I see what everyone's on about now, that was an amazing movie! I, uh, may need to see it again. ARTHUR! ♥♥♥ I would ramble more about it except I have got to finish packing. I'm heading out in half an hour for a few days vacation away, probably internet-less, but with Guy Gavriel Kay's new book Under Heaven. :D

I also got a teeny pocket-sized external hard drive for backing up to, which means, among other things, that I will probably finally getting around to installing Snow Leopard on this machine - and then, hopefully, a program that will make work a trifle easier.

Green Means Go has showed up a couple of times in BB rec threads at the anonymeme, and didn't get a single negative comment on its own thread, which makes me pretty happy because it's not like there's any reason for anonymous people to be falsely nice about it.

And it's sunny! And blueberry season!

Have a great few days. :)
electricalgwen: (dean bad day)
I think I've set a new personal record by mostly sleeping for the last 36 hours. Everyone else in the family had stomach flu. I didn't have the typical symptoms, just felt half-dead and feverish and strung out on cytokines. Blech.

When not sleeping, I caught up on a few things on LJ (I still have half-a-zillion tabs open) and here are a few things I felt like sharing (unlike the stomach flu.)

[livejournal.com profile] beatonna is always excellent but these Canadian Stereotype Comics are much fun.

Centuries out of date in Internet time, but On Women's Gold and Equality is worth a glance, imo.

If you didn't see yesterday's xkcd, Porn For Women is a must-read.

I have been watching this HP character afghan come out square by square. Wow. That's a lot of work.

I have made zero progress on bigbang. :(
electricalgwen: (nothing but tea)
Just watched Canada vs. Denmark in men's curling. Five!! Our skip is TALENTED. :D

Now I have to make a kangaroo costume in under 24 hours. My day started at 3 am. I need tea.

Hallowe'en party tonight! My hair is... well, not black. But it's darker than it was. I think it's as dark as temporary hair dye will go on my hair.

River Tam costume is ready! I have perfect boots from the Army Navy Surplus store. I tried shredding the sweater sleeves last night with limited success (it's machine-knitted top down, unfortunately), and the skirt did not dye quite as well as I'd hoped, but the overall effect is pretty awesome. The Denizen's Kaylee outfit is super as well. AND SHE MADE A JAYNE HAT IN TWO DAYS (for our, uh, prop Jayne.)

I got my flu shots today. You?

I haven't had a functional computer at home for almost a month. I still don't, and am not certain when that's likely to change. As I don't access LJ or its related email from work (or any computer that requires my real ID) I'm pretty much totally out of the loop. If you've commented on something and I have apparently rudely ignored it; if you've posted something amazing or personal and I haven't commented; or if you're waiting for more (any?) story, I do apologize. (If you'd forgotten all about me, as I hadn't been that active even in the months leading up to the Great Computer Crash of '09 - that's cool. I still apologize.)

Also, it means I haven't been able to work on a couple of WIPs, including the one I had originally hoped to post for a very special birthday. But I couldn't let it go by without getting on here somehow to wish [livejournal.com profile] madame_meretrix Many Happy Returns of the Day! I hope you have/had an awesome day, and I look forward to being back around reasonably soon. And if you haven't seen the pattern for these BSG Viper Socks, I hope it's a little something to brighten your day. :)
electricalgwen: (tw j2kiss mine)
I stapled my finger, while repairing the stapler (so Elder Son could create something out of the recycling). Ow ow ow. Also, I can't get The Glory of Love out of my head.

LJ has not managed to figure out why I still cannot load certain journals, although someone has asked some relevant questions and, I hope, gone away to think about it.

Two years ago we were in Finland in early June. I had work stuff until at least 6 each night, but it was so light that we could still do all kinds of walking, climbing and sight-seeing after supper. The cathedral in Helsinki stays open until midnight in midsummer. For some reason, this year seems to be lighter than usual here, in these longest days.

Aftermath won Best Short in the Mystical Orgins Corner in Round 8 at the Fang Fetish Awards (some time ago, but I forgot) and has been nominated for Best of Rare Male Slash Pairings in Round 9. Thanks to whoever keeps putting it forward! :)

Battlestar Galactica season 4! Yowza! I am having a ball this week talking meta with [livejournal.com profile] madame_meretrix, at possibly excessive length, and now feel the need to spend the evening wandering around looking for new icons. Speaking of icons, [livejournal.com profile] ubiquirk made me this Torchwood one! Yummy, no? Thanks, Ubi!

Two more papers have appeared in print. This is good, but I now have nothing in the pipeline. (Hence, my evening would be better spent not looking for icons... but I have Very Little Brain at the moment.)

What am I going to write for the [livejournal.com profile] lynnevitational?

electricalgwen: (owen gun)
I finished my PoA scarf! Pictures at [livejournal.com profile] hp_knitting.

The billboard near my house now contains Jeffrey Dean Morgan trying to look down Uma Thurman's top. I think I preferred it when it was Alan Rickman looking supercilious in a powdered wig. (Sorry, [livejournal.com profile] madame_meretrix, I'm just not a fan. ;)

When the radio 'round here plays Nickelback's "Rock Star", certain lyrics are censored out. Apparently you can sing about Playboy bunnies, easy girls, and a centrefold who loves to blow your, er, money, but you can't mention drugs. Or your ass. On the plus side, it means I can go on pretending that it says, "the girls come easy and the boys come cheap," which was what my brain first filled in. *g*

Torchwood! Squee! We've watched up to 2.05, and holy cow, that was a strong episode. Much better writing this season. [livejournal.com profile] apreludetoanend has made me a couple of awesome TW icons (including this Owen one) because she is nice like that.

And this helpful quiz to find out if you are persecuted struck me as funny.

Happy New Year!

I'd like to write more this year. And write better. I'd like to get back to reading and commenting the way I used to. I'd like to be more present on LJ than I have been the last six months or so. This may well not happen, though, given all the other things I'd like to do (and need to do). But I'll be here, in some form.

Speaking of which... my paid account runs out soon. I'm not sure what to do about it. There's been all that fuss (more than once), some people have chosen to jump ship, but by and large it seems things have settled down and nearly all my favourite folks are still here. And IJ is ugly.

Also, it's been suggested to me I should get a Facebook account. This would not be fandom-related; rather, for keeping up with family and friends. However, the main people I really need to send news and photos to, namely parents, do not use the Internets. Plus, a good friend and professional colleague has advised me to stay the hell away because of how much time it sucks up. (And she doesn't know I already have an LJ.)

So I thought I'd use the standard decision-making-delaying tactic of 'Get more input.' )

Now, off to make soup. :)

You may have noticed that breastfeeding's hit the news the past few days, being linked to higher IQ and lower rates of childhood obesity, as well as lowering the future risk of breast cancer for mothers. Its many other benefits are known to include decreased rates of asthma and allergies in children, decreased ear, chest and gastrointestinal infections, decreased employee absences, and big savings to the public health care system.

Personally, I love it not least because I was back in my regular jeans by 2 weeks *g*. Plus, it's cheap, ecologically friendly, and it makes travelling so easy.

Anyway, a number of child and women's health organizations put together the Breastfeeding Manifesto a while back, to improve awareness of the health benefits of breastfeeding and, importantly, its role in reducing health inequalities. They're using it to lobby the government to bring in legislation that promotes breastfeeding in several ways, including protecting women's right to breastfeed in public places and "encouraging greater social acceptance of this natural and important practice." They're also asking for increased protection and support for women who want to keep breastfeeding upon returning to work. Right now, although the WHO encourages exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of age, fewer than 2% of UK babies are exclusively breastfed at 6 months.

While I think social acceptance will take a while and is not something that can be legislated, there's no question that knowing I had the *right* to breastfeed (in Canada, with my first child) gave me the courage to do so in places and situations where I worried how people would react. All MPs were sent a copy of the Manifesto in May and asked for their support. As of 3 weeks ago, my local MP had not signed it.

So I emailed him. And he wrote back. He's now signed it and pledged to support it in the House. I think this the first time I've written to a politician and achieved an actual result. A small (baby?) step, but still. :D

So... I would be really grateful if you would take a minute to check out the Manifesto website where you can take a few seconds to sign the petition, if you are so inclined, and check if your local MP has signed it or not. And if s/he hasn't, and you feel really keen...

Thanks!

I'm back! :D

I took my computer into the store and they had a look - confirmed it was irreversible damage to the hard drive. They were willing to replace the drive but would not give me back the old one so I could send it off for data recovery! I'm not actually sure I'm going to bother with the expense of doing that, but I wanted the option. Anyway, the guy let slip how easy it is to replace the hard drive in one of these things (i.e., a lot easier than it was when my husband's laptop crashed a couple of years ago.) So we looked it up, bought a special screwdriver, and now for the same price they quoted I have a hard drive triple the size they would have installed, with motion protection, and I still have my old one in case I decide to do anything with it. Fortunately, I had most stuff backed up - I've lost some pictures, and recent writing, but most things that were academic or really important had been sent off to people for review anyway and I've just asked for copies back. Ficwise, I lost a nearly-done chapter of Fault Lines, and a couple of Spander starts, but nothing that was going terribly well.

Meanwhile, I'd just signed up for the Xander round at [livejournal.com profile] maleslashminis the day before the crash, and I need to get my (now overdue) fic up asap. Anyone up for doing a quick beta? It's about 1200 words of G-rated Xander/Riley.

On Tuesday, I left my laptop plugged in and working fine, when I went to get Elder Son from school. We dropped by the library, came home, I fed the baby, made supper... and discovered my hard drive had gone off the rails. Terminal, irretrievable meltdown. It's just out of warranty, and although I do back-up fairly regularly, I hadn't done so since before we went away for the summer - having been uploading all the holiday photos, updating my CV, and writing. Argh.

Posting from the local library at the moment, but I can't read or post fic from here. Not sure when I'll be back online, but please know I'm not ignoring you. :)

...neither can the floods drown it.

One time, my supervisor at work took a small group of us out at lunchtime. Only we didn't have lunch. He gave us a choice: "We can have a feast for the body - or a feast for the mind." (Imagine it in an Inigo Montoya accent.) So we went to the nearest bookstore instead and he bought us each a book.

I got The Summer of the Great-Grandmother by Madeleine L'Engle. It's a very moving, simple, beautiful description of an approaching death and how the family dealt with it. L'Engle herself died this past week, age 88.

Her "children's" books tackled difficult subjects like death, religion, sexuality, hatred, and love, in a straightforward way and without being preachy, although her faith is evident throughout. When I was 15 or so, I kept giving "A Ring of Endless Light" to friends for birthdays etc., and I've continued to give away various of her books, including the wonderful poetry collection "A Cry Like a Bell". (The poem from the point of view of the mother of baby Judas is amazing.) Of her adult novels, I particularly recommend "A Live Coal in the Sea."

Lloyd Alexander is dead, too. Where's my childhood gone? *sigh*
electricalgwen: (jubilant gaia)
I am so spoilt. Me in my uber-First World with more than enough food and water, clean air and clothes, all-present-and-accounted-for (albeit slightly insane) family, and oodles of books (which I am able to read, having been edumacated, despite being female.) And many, many other blessings of which I am not sufficiently conscious day to day.

But oh, man, I've missed my Internet connection!!

I have a brief time online here in which I want to say a huge THANK YOU for the super birthday wishes from [livejournal.com profile] iadorespike and [livejournal.com profile] quinntzadok, the e-card from [livejournal.com profile] entrenous88 who clearly has me pegged (omg dancing squirrels and multiple musical genres!!), the wonderful post to [livejournal.com profile] birthdayrecs by [livejournal.com profile] cordelianne (it made me blush and squee), and birthday fic from [livejournal.com profile] apreludetoanend here and [livejournal.com profile] madame_meretrix here. You are all so thoughtful, lovely and talented people, and you really made my week extra special. And, at some point when I have a few more minutes online, I hope to get back and comment properly and stuff, and catch up on the highlights I've already missed and will miss in the next couple of weeks. (Keep track of fics, yours or others, I need to know about when I get back! Oh, and if I missed anybody/thing in the above list - it wasn't intentional, I just have trouble with a skip=>300 kind of flist! Point me at anything I overlooked! *g*)

But I'm having a really good time, seeing a lot of people I haven't seen in far too long, cooking and eating good food, helping my sister clear out both physical and psychic junk, travelling and hiking and snuggling the baby and reading books and falling in water and drinking hundreds of cups of tea and...just generally living.

Yay Canada.

Also?
HOLY COW I GUESSED RIGHT.
electricalgwen: (Default)
There've been many things I wanted to post about here in the last few weeks, but I've felt guilty about making personal posts when I still have several fic things owed to people, and haven't been writing. Which, it now occurs to me, is a bit silly - but I'm heading out of town for a month and internet access is likely to be patchy, so I thought I'd stick my head above ground and say hey, I'm still more-or-less here, and there will be fic forthcoming. Eventually.

My [livejournal.com profile] lynnevitational fic is late and still unfinished, nor is it what I originally wanted to write (nor even the second idea) - but it is about 2500 words further along than it was a few days ago (which may not sound like much, but given my recent lack of productivity, is an encouraging sign. It may even get done in the next week! though then there will be issues of how to post it...)

Anyway, I hope you all have a good summer. I'm going to go through LJ withdrawal, I know it!

On the plus side, my chances of being spoiled for the Deathly Hallows are about to go way down. *g*

And now off to finish weighing all the suitcases, get dressed, get small ones dressed, make travel lunch, and get out the door in the next 45 minutes.
