new year, new poll!

Happy New Year!
I'd like to write more this year. And write better. I'd like to get back to reading and commenting the way I used to. I'd like to be more present on LJ than I have been the last six months or so. This may well not happen, though, given all the other things I'd like to do (and need to do). But I'll be here, in some form.
Speaking of which... my paid account runs out soon. I'm not sure what to do about it. There's been all that fuss (more than once), some people have chosen to jump ship, but by and large it seems things have settled down and nearly all my favourite folks are still here. And IJ is ugly.
Also, it's been suggested to me I should get a Facebook account. This would not be fandom-related; rather, for keeping up with family and friends. However, the main people I really need to send news and photos to, namely parents, do not use the Internets. Plus, a good friend and professional colleague has advised me to stay the hell away because of how much time it sucks up. (And she doesn't know I already have an LJ.)

Now, off to make soup. :)

Date: 2008-01-01 03:56 pm (UTC)i put 'yes, because you need 100 userpics', yes to IJ (even though it's ugly) and 'time-waster'. but it's tricky. LJ is pretty evil. and now with the flagging feature, it's even worse. but, on the other hand, ads are annoying, and icons are like outfits, so. knowing that we're all probably going to hang around here, it'd be a drag to have to look at ads all the time and not have all your icons. if you can spare the money, i'd say renew.
IJ is ugly, but i definitely recommend some sort of backup journal for your writing. have things in more than one place is definitely better, don't you think? i've started backing stuff up at wordpress, and if i ever post another story, i will post it directly there, leaving only a link at LJ, just because i don't like the idea that someone could flag me if they felt like it.
and for facebook: that's hard! because it's both a social tool and a time-waster, you know? but if your family doesn't use the internet and it won't be fandom related and i only get to choose one, then time-waster it is. selfishly, i'd be concerned at how much facebook impacted your available time for LJ. *g*
how are you? i hope everything is going well! hope the little ones are enjoying their holiday!

Date: 2008-01-01 11:56 pm (UTC)I've not really thought about having my stuff backed up elsewhere online. I have all my fic stored on my computer, which I back up to an external drive. (Ironically, when my laptop crashed in the autumn, I retrieved recent non-backed-up stuff from LJ.) I definitely see your point about the flags, though.
Yeah, I'm not really sold on Facebook. My husband and sister use it a lot but I get the feeling that there'd be this flurry of activity in the first few weeks, while I found people and they found me, and then it would just be another neglected source of guilt. And it would definitely cut into LJ time! and RL is doing that enough as is! *pouts*
All is well! I am really enjoying the holiday, and so are the little ones. We had a lovely family Christmas and have been playing with various gifts (science kit, crafts, board games) and reading. (Then watching Bones after they're in bed. ;)

Date: 2008-01-01 07:34 pm (UTC)Is fandom migrating? Parts of it. I think in a short while, much of the HP fandom will be on IJ. And granted, other fandoms don't seem to be leaving LJ at the same rate, but HP is huge, and when HP people branch out more to other fandoms, that may be the tipping point for displacing fic and fandom from LJ if they're already all on IJ.

Date: 2008-01-01 08:12 pm (UTC)Hi! I'm totally grabbing a seat on the "hoping to see you around more" bandwagon, but obviously, sometimes there are other things that have to come first. =)
