Been buried under a heap of practicalities the last four weeks, since car was torched - fighting with car insurance company over value of completely-destroyed-car, fighting with landlord's insurance company who are refusing to pay to replace the front window, cracked by the heat of the inferno, because since it was my car, it is, in their f***ed-up opinion, my fault, trying to buy new (used) car without getting totally ripped off...
I think I may have managed that last, though still out a lot of money I couldn't spare.
So, writing taking a break, as are many other personally and professionally important things. Grr. Argh. Between that, more local violence, work insanity, administrative nightmares, and the continuing struggle to keep child's homework done, healthy meals made, clothes washed, fish fed, friends helped, family talked to just often enough to not feel neglected - dammit.
Suggested reading: The Thief, followed by The Queen of Attolia, by Megan Whelan Turner. Awesome. The first is splendid, and the second leaves it in the dust 'cos it has all the exposition out of the way and can just get on with a soul-wrenching, highly intelligent and well-written story. Kinda like the X-Men movies in that regard - X2 could really start moving, since it no longer had to do all the basic character introductions for those audience members (like me) who hadn't read the comics.
