Did Caroline give informed consent, in the ethical and legal sense, to becoming a Doll?
This meta contains SPOILERS for all aired episodes of Season One but not Epitaph One. ETA: Good grief, I can't believe I forgot to say thanks to
apreludetoanend for beta-reading, and to A & E for listening to me rant about this.
Author’s Note: I recognize that consent is a thorny issue and can raise some strong feelings, particularly when relating to sex. This essay deals with consent in general, as I think the issues in Dollhouse are much broader than simply the sexual, although the question of consent to sex does raise particular worries given its personal nature and the misogynistic aspects of culture and society. I welcome any comments or criticism on any part of this essay, and will try to respond calmly and respectfully. I ask that you please do the same, whether responding to me or to anyone else who happens to comment here.
( So, can the Dollhouse be considered to have the informed consent of the people who enter and become Dolls? )
